Garrafón Park in Isla Mujeres: What It Is and If It's Worth It

Garrafón Park is a natural reef park at the southern tip of Isla Mujeres, next to Punta Sur. It is an enclosed park with sea access for snorkeling, activities such as a zip line and kayaks, pools, a restaurant and one of the highest viewpoints on the island. You get in by buying a day pass.

Where exactly is it?

On the south end of the island, in the Punta Sur area, up on the cliffs. That matters more than it sounds: the ferry arrives in the north, which is where the town, Playa Norte and most restaurants are. From the pier to Garrafón you cross the island, usually by taxi or golf cart.

The island is small so the ride is short, but it is worth budgeting for in both time and money.

What can you do there?

• Snorkeling from the shore, in the park's reef area.

• Zip line over the sea.
• Pools and loungers, with restaurant service.
• The viewpoint, looking out over the Caribbean from the southern cliffs.

Is it worth it?

It depends on the kind of day you want:

• Yes, if you are travelling with kids or with people who prefer entering the sea from the shore, with pools and services nearby.
• Yes, if you like parks with organised activities and everything in one place.
• Yes, if you want the Punta Sur viewpoint, one of the best views on the island.
• Less so, if what you want is white-sand beach: for that, Playa Norte at the other end is what most people recommend.
• No, if you want to sail. Garrafón is a land-based park with sea access, not a sailing experience.

Garrafón or a catamaran tour: they are not the same thing

This is the most common question when planning the day, and the short answer is that they solve different problems.

Garrafón is a destination: you get to the island on your own, cross to the south and spend the day inside the park.

A catamaran tour is the full day from Cancún: the sail across, a snorkeling stop at one of the reefs in the bay, an open bar on board, and time on the island with a buffet lunch at a beach club.

Plainly: catamaran tours do not go into Garrafón. They sail, anchor at the reefs and come ashore in the north. If your plan is specifically to see Garrafón, the way there is on your own by ferry.

Can you snorkel without entering Garrafón?

Yes, in several places. The bay between Cancún and Isla Mujeres has reefs you reach by boat: El Meco, El Farito, Los Manchones and MUSA. Catamaran tours stop at one of them, picked according to the day's conditions, with gear included.

The practical difference is that at Garrafón you walk into the water from the shore, while on a tour you anchor right over the reef.

How it fits into a day on Isla Mujeres

If you are going on your own with a full day, one split that works: morning at Playa Norte, lunch in town, afternoon in the south between Garrafón and the Punta Sur viewpoint. Leave room for the last ferry back — that is the most common mistake.
