There are two ways to cross from Cancún to Isla Mujeres, and they are not really competing: the ferry is cheaper and takes about 20 minutes, while the catamaran tour is a full day that includes the crossing, snorkeling, food and drinks. Picking the wrong one will not ruin your trip, but it changes what you spend and what you see.

This guide compares both options and says plainly when each one makes sense.

The difference in one sentence

The ferry is transport: it drops you at the Isla Mujeres pier and the rest of the day is yours to organise. The catamaran is an experience: you sail, stop to snorkel at the reef, eat on board and arrive at the island with the day already sorted.

When the ferry is the better choice

The ferry wins in these cases, and it is worth saying so plainly:

You are staying overnight on the island. The catamaran returns the same day; the ferry does not tie you to a return time.
You want to explore on your own: rent a golf cart, visit Punta Sur, eat wherever you feel like.
You are travelling on a tight budget and do not mind organising the day yourself.
You already know the island and are going for something specific.
You get seasick. Twenty minutes goes by fast; eight hours does not.

When the catamaran is the better choice

It is your first time and you want to see the best of it without planning anything.
You want to snorkel. The ferry does not stop at the reef; the catamaran anchors at the good spots with gear included.
You are travelling as a couple or a group and would rather have food, drinks and the beach club already sorted.
You only have one free day and want to make the most of it.
Once you add it all up, ferry plus food plus drinks plus a snorkeling trip plus a beach club tends to land fairly close to the catamaran price.

What each option includes

Ferry: the crossing only, around 20 minutes each way.
Catamaran: sailing, reef snorkeling with sanitized gear, buffet lunch, domestic open bar and a beach club on the island. A full day, around 8 hours.

Where does each one depart from?

Ferries leave from Puerto Juárez and from several Hotel Zone piers. Our catamarans leave from Marina Playa Tortugas, at kilometre 6.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán.

If you are staying in the Hotel Zone, both are close. From downtown Cancún, Puerto Juárez is handier.

Can you snorkel if you take the ferry?

Yes, but by booking snorkeling separately once on the island. The difference is that the catamaran stops at the reefs during the crossing, including MUSA, the underwater sculpture museum. Going by ferry those spots are out of reach unless you book an extra trip.

So which one do you pick?

In short: if you are spending several days on the island or want to explore at your own pace, take the ferry. If you have one day and want it to include sailing, snorkeling and food without organising anything, take the catamaran.
