A beach club in Isla Mujeres is a beachfront spot with loungers, shade, bathrooms, a restaurant and a bar, which you get into by paying an entrance fee or committing to a minimum spend. Most of them are on the north side of the island, near Playa Norte and the town, which is where the ferry arrives.

They are not all the same, and the difference is not the price but the kind of day they offer. This guide covers how to choose.

How do they work?

Almost always in one of three ways:

Minimum spend. No entrance fee, but you commit to spending a set amount on food and drinks. The most common setup.
Entry with credit. You pay on arrival and that amount comes off whatever you order.
Day pass. A flat rate that includes a lounger and, depending on the place, food or an open bar.

Ask which of the three applies before you sit down. It is the number one source of surprises when the bill arrives.

What do they usually include?

A lounger and umbrella
Bathrooms and showers
Restaurant and bar service on the sand
Sometimes a pool
Sometimes kayaks or snorkel gear, usually for an extra charge

How to pick yours

Less by the name, more by the kind of day:

With kids: look for a pool, calm water and plenty of shade. The Playa Norte area has the calmest water on the island.
As a couple: the smaller, quieter ones, away from the places playing loud music.
In a group: the ones with music and atmosphere. Check whether they take large groups without a booking.
Short on time: whichever is closest to the pier. Crossing the island and back eats a good hour.

How much time does it need?

A beach club is worth at least three hours. Any less and it turns into a race: arrive, order, eat and run for the ferry.

If you are going on your own, budget the transfer from the pier and, above all, the last ferry back. It is the most common mistake for people organising the day themselves.

Do you need to book?

In high season and at weekends, yes, especially for a group. Midweek and off-season you can usually just turn up, but the spots with a view fill early.

When the beach club already comes included

So: if you want to pick your own club and stay all day, go on your own by ferry. If you want the day already sorted — sailing, snorkeling, food and beach with nothing to organise — the tour already includes it.

What to bring

Cash. Not every place takes cards.
Biodegradable sunscreen. This is reef territory and several places require it.
A towel, though many lend them.
Dry clothes for the way back.
